Acton Oakland will be modeled after the Acton Academy originally started in Austin, Texas by Laura and Jeff Sandefer. Acton Oakland, Acton Academy Austin, and over a dozen other schools of the Acton Academy family will work in a deep collaborative relationship to share processes, systems, lessons learned and strategies to help make each learner-driven environment the best it possibly can be.
Here's sample schedule of how are day may look
As the year progresses we will tweak it to fit our Heroes
These are the four core processes that keep the learning-driven community alive and thriving
Everybody is born to change the world, however that journey, hero's journey is difficult. We work with heroes to prepare them for the path that lay ahead of them as they find their calling and change the world.
The heroes and parents develop contracts, once acceptable everybody signs it. This essentially becomes the constitution that everybody is held to. When the contract is broken processes are developed to correct the situation.
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound goals are created by heroes on a daily basis to keep them on their heroes journey.
At the end of everyday heroes are tasked to maintain the studio. This task transfers ownership of the studio to the heroes, making it feel like it is their community or another home.
OUR BELIEF SYSTEMS
We believe each person who enters Acton Academy will find a calling that changes the world
We promise through Socratic guiding and experiential learning to encourage each member of our community to:
- Begin a Hero's Journey
- Discover precious gifts and a commitment to mastery;
- Become a curious, independent, life-long learner;
- Embrace the forging of a strong character;
- Cherish the arts, the physical world, and the mysteries of life; and
- Treasure economic, political, and religions freedom.
- We believe each child has a gift that can change the world in a profound way.
- We believe in a closely connected family of lifelong learners.
- We believe in learning by knowing, learning by doing and learning by being.
- We believe in economic, religious, and political freedom.
Our Educational Philosophy
We believe clear thinking leads to good decisions, good decisions lead to the right habits, the right habits forge character, and character determines destiny.
We focus on three pillars of education:
LEARN TO LEARN: Self-paced challenges, goal setting techniques, and measures of accountability will equip children to be independent lifelong learners.
LEARN TO DO: Hands-on Quests for Science, Entrepreneurship and the Arts will prepare children for Apprenticeships and real world challenges.
- LEARN TO BE: The Hero’s Journey, self-governance, and relational contracts and consequences will form the virtuous habits that develop strong character.
